All of us are constantly updating our devices, be they mobile phones, computers, laptops, cars, refrigerators, etc. We update our wardrobes, diets, hairstyles, need I go on? However, when and how often do we pay the same attention to our Brain and Mind and get rid of the junk and see that it too gets updated?
First let’s look at why we update anything. Isn’t it so that we get better functioning, better results, faster and easier access, and in the shortest amount of time?
Using the analogy of the computer you would agree that it is only as efficient as the software installed in it. So when the software is outdated or faulty, it needs to be upgraded or updated to function more efficiently. In the same manner, our Minds are running on programs which have been installed in us from birth. We can call them programs or conditioning.
Everyone has been programmed from birth and all these programs are housed in our Subconscious Mind. We get programmed (conditioned) by our parents, care-givers, teachers, authority figures, our race and culture, the media and a host of outside influences. This programming is done through instructions, rules or laws, which then create our thought patterns, our attitudes and perceptions and most importantly our beliefs. If the conditioning we receive is positive, then we function in a healthy and happy mode. When however our conditioning is negative, we then have self-sabotaging beliefs that hinder rather than help us. These belief systems can range from any of the following: cultural, religious, physical, mental, moral, medical and theosophical beliefs. The important thing to note here is that most of these programs are running on auto-pilot. This means that 95% of the time the sub-conscious mind is running the show even though We think that it is our conscious mind that is in control. 90% of the zillion (yes, zillion) thoughts that we think each day are repetitive, old, and negative, and most of us are unaware of them. Hence, the importance of being Mindful.Of learning how to observe the mind and our thinking. This is an ability that can be learned and what is taught in the Silva Methodology. To be watchful of what thoughts are coming up, deleting those that no longer serve us and replacing or substituting new positive thought patterns.
Our Subconscious mind has accepted the conditioning as instructions or commands and It follows them precisely without questioning whether it is good or bad for us. Moreover, even when a conscious decision is made by the Conscious mind if it is not in alignment with the belief or program running in the Subconscious mind, the Subconscious mind will override it. This is why most diets fail, because it is not congruent with the belief running in the Subconscious mind. So what is the solution? Change the program/conditioning in the subconscious mind. How do we do this? In order to do this we must gain access to the subconscious mind. And the only way to gain entry is to enter a deeper level of mind than the Conscious mind, which is attained through altering our brain frequencies to the Alpha and Theta levels of mind. And the way to do this is through Relaxation and Meditation. Once we access our subconscious mind, we are then able to delete the negative and outmoded programs and install new positive and life enhancing mental software that will help us achieve our goals and dreams faster and easier. We will now be in a position to create what we want to achieve the best possible outcomes for ourselves and for our environment. Headaches getting you down? Time to say toodle-loo to pain!
Have you felt like your head was the pincushion for a thousand burning needles? Or maybe it’s been more like a slow thudding pain that continuously aches throughout the day?
Or perhaps you’ve experienced one of those searing waves of pain that make it impossible to even think? I understand. All you wanted to do was lie down and wait for the world of pain to melt away.
So you popped the pills, lay down in a dark room, which was spinning faster than any carousel you could imagine and allowed the effect of the medication to kick in as you gave in to the warm embrace of sleep.
But the relief is short lived. Sometimes, you don’t even have access to medication and at other time as you just can’t put your head down – kids need to be dropped to school, groceries need to picked up and work needs to get done. Those are the facts of life.
Imagine what it would be like to live headache free? Just before I tell you, there is something I’d like you to do for me. Fill up a glass with water. Now, take the hand that is holding the glass of water and stretch it out. Continue keeping your arm and hand (holding the glass of water) stretched out for a minute. Keeping your eyes closed, feel what is happening in your arm,notice the strain and tension that is building up At the end of 2 minutes, put the glass down and feel how your arm feels now. Different, right? And whew what a relief to put it down.
What kind of crazy exercise was this anyway. Sometimes we need to experience physically what we are doing unconsciously. And this little exercise was to help you understand that when you put unnecessary strain on your arm, the muscles tensed and contracted and the result was aching muscles and pain.
Now when we hold a worrisome, anxious or fearful thought, whether it is about a person, situation or event, real or imaginary, and we continue to focus on it, the muscles surrounding the head contract. The more they contract, the more tension, strain and pain is built up, and voila you have a tension or migraine headache.
When you put the glass down, what did you do instinctively? You massaged your arm and soothed it, and that helped release the ache and it felt better.
In the same way, take that worry, anxiety or fear and put it down. Ask yourself, how is this thought helping me? If it is not helping you, turn your attention consciously to something else.
Now check out the following tips on how to get rid of a headache naturally.
1. Take a few drops of lavender oil (lavender has soothing and calming properties) and gently massage your temples, very slowly. As you massage, take deep slow belly breaths and focus
on the air, going in and then going out.
2. Imagine that you are at the beach, or your favorite place and soft gentle hands are gently massaging your head.
3. Yawn slowly, opening your mouth as wide as you can, tilt your head gently backwards. Do this 5/6 times. Then get up and stretch.
4. Go for a walk in the fresh air. If this is not possible, put on your favourite soft music and dance. When you dance, your mind and body are totally in the present, and so are you.
5. Drink water, lots of it. Sip it slowly and feel it energising your body, brain and mind.
6. Have a warm, relaxing shower. Feel the water droplets cascading over your head and washing away any tension or stress.
7. Lie down on a soft bed. Now begin to breathe slowly. Say on the in breath – Relax. On the out breath – Release. Keep your eyes closed and focus again on the air entering and leaving your nostrils.
8. Learn to Meditate. This is by far the most important skill you will ever learn to relax your body, brain and mind and get in touch with your true essence which is Peace. Meditating has so many benefits, I will keep that for another article. In the meantime,

Are you able to fall asleep easily?
Are you able to sleep through the night?
Are you able to wake up refreshed and energised?
Are you able to have a 10-15 minute nap to energise yourself?
Do you have enough energy and vitality to keep you going through the day?If you are irritable cranky and lethargic it could be that you are not getting enough of restful alpha sleep or REM sleep.
When we are not getting adequate sleep, it impacts every area of our life. It affects our health, physically, mentally and emotionally. It has serious consequences as far as our memory, learning and cognitive abilities are concerned. When we don’t have sufficient restful sleep, we lose our focus, attention, making it difficult to retain information in our long term memory banks. Without adequate sleep and rest, our brain can no longer function at optimal level to file information properly, and thus our ability to access previously learned information is severely affected.
Moreover, because sleep affects our ability to focus and concentrate, this in turn affects our ability to make wise decisions because our perception and interpretation of events is clouded by “brain fog.”

Meditation is a means of relaxing the body, calming the mind and focusing one’s attention within one’s self.
Most people are more focussed on the outer world, the objective world, and hence their mind is a constant stream of thoughts, most of them anxious, stressed and fearful. This in turn creates stressful feelings and emotions of worry, anxiety, fear and depression. And this can lead to physical, mental and emotional burnout.
In meditation, the primary aim is to take the attention and shift it from the outer to the inner world. Our inner world is our subjective world, where most of us spend our time without even being aware of it. When we shift our attention to our body as in a progressive relaxation where the focus is on each part of the body, starting from the head and going right to the toes, something wonderful happens. We become aware of how much tension we are holding, and now we are in a position to release it. People are not aware of the fact that tension, fear, negative events and trauma, unless released, are locked in certain parts of the body. Learning to relax will help you save your life.
First of all what is Stress and how many kinds of Stress are there?
Stress is when a stimulus, ie. a person, situation or event, is perceived as a threat. Our emotional brain then prepares us for the fight or flight response, and cortisol and adrenaline shoots through our body preparing and energising us to either fight or flee from what we’ll call the Dinosaur.
There is acute stress, which is short lived, and chronic stress which is prolonged stress.
Acute stress affects the majority of people, such as someone cutting you off in traffic and you swerving to avoid them, or you are informed that the boss wants to see you immediately, or your baby or a friend is suddenly unwell. Once the event is over, the brain sends a message that all is well and the body returns to a state of homeostasis.
Prolonged stress is when the anxiety about an event that has happened or is about to happen continues for days or weeks or sometimes years. This is when stress begins to affect our health adversely. And the result is anger, frustration, depression, diabetes, high cholesterol levels, migraines, and increased chances of a stroke or heart attack. All stress be it mental, physical or psychological leads to emotional stress or distress. This in turn leads to impairment of the physical, mental and emotional faculties evoking helplessness, a state of powerlessness, anxiety and depression. (more…)
